Anyone else remember the cult film, Envy? It involves Jack Black and Ben Stiller devising a plan to create a spray that rids the world of all dog waste. Well, the future has arrived. Not quite the "Vapoorize" product they developed in the movie, but one Dutch company has begun testing a system of drones that would help dispose of dog waste. Dogdrones is the by-product of the Dutch dog website Tinki.nl and its partner Space53, the international drone test center. In the Netherlands alone, 1.5 million dogs poop on average 2.3 times per day, resulting in 1.3 billion dog turds per year (yes, these are legitimate numbers). Their idea is to combine two separate drones, Watchdog 1 and Patroldog 1, to aerially detect dog waste using thermal imaging and then relay that information back to the ground-bot that would roll in and remove the waste. This may sound like something out of a sci-fi comedy, but it is in fact a real future possibility. Beta versions are being tested right now with hopes of developing better technology. The aerial imaging of the Watchdog 1 is going well, while the ability of the Patroldog 1 to dispose of, ah, bigger loads is proving to be a bit of a crapshoot. While the technology is still in development, checkout the website and signup to become a test pilot for the dog drones; saving humanity one doggy-load at a time.   Tyler Miller is the type of writer that prefers the typewriter.
